Graduate Practica & Field Placements

Rigorous internships for psychology and social work graduate students.

We believe that the best way to become an effective clinician is through a rich and challenging clinical experience.

The Brookline Center offers one of the region’s deepest and most comprehensive training programs for graduate students in Psychology, Social Work, and Family and Couples Therapy. Our program is also one of the largest, accepting about 10 interns each year for intensive learning, practice, and supervision.

Because teaching and learning are core to the Center’s work, we take pride in providing supervision above and beyond what most schools mandate. We welcome our interns as valued members of The Brookline Center’s clinical team, with opportunities to join the staff for plentiful learning seminars and collaboration. Our graduates gain broad, wide-ranging experience in both short- and long-term therapy, working with a wide variety of clients and within community systems such as housing and public safety.

What sets our approach apart?

The philosophy of the internship training program offered at The Brookline Center is to prepare psychologists who want to work with racially and culturally diverse and underserved populations using a practitioner-scholar model.

The Brookline Center provides deep experience in delivering long-term outpatient care, as well as short-term counseling. Each intern receives 2-3 hours per week of supervision, far beyond the 1.5 hours required by most schools.

As essential members of our clinical team, Brookline Center interns gain comprehensive training in a wide range of modalities: individual, group, and community-based care. Our staff clinicians value their engagement with interns, listening to their perspectives, and helping them experience the most rewarding internships possible. Our training is culturally responsive in a diverse community, cultivating a vibrant working environment and extending clinicians’ skills.

How it works

Interns work 24-25 hours weekly for an academic year (September-May/June), contributing to our mission of excellence in community mental health. Generally this includes 12 hours of direct service and 2-3 hours of supervision. Interns join clinical staff for mandatory and optional weekly learning seminars and plan together at weekly team meetings. Each field of study has its own mix of requirements and opportunities, detailed below. Internships at the Brookline Center are unpaid.

Candidates may apply to only one of the three internship areas of focus.

We are actively interested in ensuring that the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health represents a range of experiences and backgrounds. Qualified candidates with diverse racial, cultural, multilingual, religious, class, and/or gender backgrounds and experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Psychology Department of the Brookline Community Mental Health Center will offer two
post-doctoral training positions for aspiring psychologists during the 2022/2023 training year
with specializations in group therapy and neuropsychology. Job postings below.
