Frequently Asked Questions For Youth
What does New Pathways do?
New Pathways is a program that works with youth between the ages of 12 and 17 in the Boston area who are thinking about running away, have already done so, or are homeless.
Program coordinators work with youth who are facing difficult circumstances:
You might be Scared… Confused… Or unsure of where to turn.
We Can Help.
We can place you with a host family while you work with us to figure out what makes sense for you. Maybe it's going back home… Maybe it’s finding another safe place to live…
New Pathways Offers:
- A safe place to stay
- Crisis intervention
- Individual counseling and support
- Family counseling
- Mediation Services
- Advocacy
- Aftercare Services for up to 30 days after discharge
All services are voluntary, free of charge, and confidential.
I or a friend of mine needs some place to stay. How do I get into your program?
Give us a call; we can work with you to find the best solution for
your situation. If you don’t want to call yourself you can have a
friend or a concerned adult call for you. When you call, make sure you
are in a safe place and if possible have a number where we can call you
back. We can be reached at (617) 277-8107.
What will happen when I call?
One of the New Pathways Coordinators will ask you some questions about your situation and tell you about the Program. If it seems like the Program could be helpful to you, a meeting will be arranged. If for some reason New Pathways is not what you need, the Coordinator will help you find the right services.
Who are the host families?
Host families have volunteered because they want to help teenagers. These families have completed an interview process and a home inspection as well as a criminal background check. Many of these families have hosted other teens in the past and/or have their own children.
Is New Pathways connected to DSS?
No. New Pathways is not affiliated with the Department of Social Services (DSS).
How long can I stay with a host family?
If your parent or guardian has not given their consent for you to be in the Program, you can stay for up to 3 nights. If your parent or guardian agrees to allow you to stay in the program, you can stay for up to 15 days.
What can I bring with me?
You can bring the clothing and belongings that you need with you. For the safety of you and the host family, please don't bring anything illegal.
Can I continue to go to school/work? What about after school?
Yes. While in the program you will need to continue to attend school and be in other structured activities during the day. The New Pathways Coordinators will assist you in figuring out what to do when your host family is not home.
Can I continue to see my friends or family?
Yes. One of the Program Coordinators will work with you and your family to figure out a healthy plan for seeing your friends and family.
What are the program rules? Is there a curfew?
Each host home has different house rules. Your host parents and the Program Coordinators will explain these specific rules to you. In addition you must agree to treat the host family and their home with respect.
